Pulp Fiction

Is money evil? That is the impression you get from Quintin Tarantino's film, Pulp Fiction. The movie is about drug addicted hit men trying to get their bosses dirty work done. The movie makes money seem evil by showing the level of deprivity it can drive men to. John Travolta and Samuel Jackson are the two hit men. And because for money they will kill anyone. Samuel L. Jackson's character atleast has remorse. Vincent Vega, Travolta, has none. He never expresses any guilt for the people he's killed. I think this is a strong comment about capitalism.
It shows what competition drives men to. These men trying to be the best hit men possible, have sold their souls for money. When man is forced to compete against it self, ugly things happen. Marcellus Wallace represents the fed in this movie. He controls all the financial situations in the film, because he is the richest man. Men are obliged to do what he asks in order to hopefully gain his favor, as well as some of his money. Because other men want his money, Marcellus has body gaurds. This can be seen as another comment on capitalism.
Tarantino is basically saying we are all for sale. We sell our lives for wages per hour, some of us just have easier jobs to deal with. Most of us don't put our lives on the line to work, but he is reminding us that some of us do. I don't think he is necesarily attacking capitalism as much as questioning it.
This film was written in a very creative way. Not only was it three stories intertwined, but they were shown out of order. I don't know if this changes how people see the movie really. I think the big difference is he creates a gestlat in peoples minds. This is to say, when people realize exactly what's going on, they feel smart for realizing it. They feel like they figured something out, when really they were just watching a movie from beginning to end. The gestalt makes the movie more enjoyable, but I think the movie would be just as good if it was shown in chronological order.

...

Comedy isn't funny today.  Comedy in movies and cartoons these day is based on random interchangable jokes.  Writers don't even try anymore.   I feel like artistic expression has lost most of it's creativity sense the creation of the internet.
I believe this can be blamed on the fact that anyone can publish their own art now.  Now there are lower standards than ever keeping art from the public.  There are no great comedic authors today like William Shakespeare or Charles Dickens.  Today authors share credit for shows like Family guy and the Simpsons. These shows are prime examples of falling standards of mental stimulation involved in comedy.  These shows rely jokes like large fighting chickens and short cut scenes.  They are the literary equivalent of "not" jokes.
I feel that without strict standards from audiences, the American public will forever be condemned to entertainment without brain stimulation.  But the way most citizens act, I feel like they might be ok with that.

Early in the moring rising to the street.....

Sometimes life feels likes a song. Everyone has had one of those days that felt more like "Beneath the Killing Moon" then "Obla Di-Obla Dah". Today I woke up to the song "What I got?"
This makes me ask myself: Do I really feel that love is all I got? Or do I just secretly crave a cigarette? This made me ask myself a third question: Does the song playing in your head have anything to do with your emotions?
I don't really know the answer to any of these questions though. I just met a girl, who makes me quite happy, but I definitely don't feel in love with her. I just quit smoking, but a cigarette is the last thing on my mind. These two ideas make me feel like the answer is simple: There is no connection between the songs in our head and the thoughts in our mind.
But then I remembered that I usually have sad songs in my head when I'm sad. And as expected, I had happy songs stuck in my head when I was happy. So does your mind play off of your emotional state more than your wants and whats immediately in your head?
I believe this is closest to the truth. I believe that unless you are a song writer, your mind can't usually find the exact words to express how you feel in song, so your mind must find songs that are close to how you feel. This is why some when we are around friends, songs about friends usually come to mind etc.

March Madness

Every March something amazing happens.   College basketball takes over the television.   The NCAA Basketball tournament is one of the most exciting times of the year. It's a time to watch underdogs battle to become champions.   It's also a time of great city pride.  Cities all over America band together behind their local college's basketball team.
I remember when I was young watching every single wildcats game.  It was great times.  Now that I'm at NAU,  I'm hoping that the Lumberjacks will make the tournament.
